This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Students will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems, with a focus on residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The course covers a wide range of topics, including:
Basic Thermodynamics – Understanding the principles of heat transfer, pressure, and temperature regulation, along with how these affect HVAC system performance.
System Components – Familiarization with key components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, heat exchangers, blowers, and thermostats.
Refrigerants & Piping – Learning about different types of refrigerants, their handling, environmental impact, and pipe installation.
Air Distribution Systems – Overview of ductwork design, airflow patterns, and strategies for efficient air distribution.
Electrical Systems & Controls – Study of electrical components including motors, relays, transformers, thermostats, and control circuits.
Heating Systems – Focus on boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, and other heating methods, with an emphasis on efficiency and safety.
Cooling Systems – Introduction to air conditioning systems, including split and packaged units, chillers, and cooling towers.
Energy Efficiency & Green Technologies – Emphasis on energy-saving strategies, eco-friendly refrigerants, and sustainable HVAC practices.
Building Codes & Safety – Understanding local building codes, safety standards, and industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics – Practical techniques for diagnosing and repairing common HVAC system issues using modern tools and technologies.
By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the foundational skills to enter the HVAC industry, with the knowledge to perform system installations, conduct routine maintenance, and address mechanical and electrical faults in HVAC systems. Some courses may include hands-on labs, simulations, or industry certification preparations (e.g., EPA Section 608 certification).
